Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Her Role in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at 89 Years Old.

This award-nominated actress Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran left us 89 years old.

This actor, whose credits featured Chinatown, died at her home at her Ojai, California home. This announcement was shared through a message shared by her daughter, award-winning actress Laura Dern, her daughter.

Dern, who appeared with her mother in various films like Wild at Heart, referred to her as “my amazing hero plus my special gift of a mother”, noting that she was present during her final moments.

“She was the greatest grandmother, mother, daughter, star, artist and compassionate soul that seemed almost dreamlike,” she stated. “We were lucky to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Early Career and Breakthrough

The start of her career saw small roles in TV shows such as Gunsmoke and that decade had her appearing with Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.

In the same year, 1974, she shared the screen with Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s praised film the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her role earned Ladd her initial Oscar nod in the supporting actress category.

1980s and Beyond

In the 1980s, she appeared in the dramatic film Black Widow and funny follow-up National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and also took part in Alice, a sitcom derived from Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

During the next ten years, she received another Oscar nomination for supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her role in David Lynch’s the movie Wild at Heart in which she portrayed the parent of her actual daughter the character played by Dern. The next year she received another nomination for her role in Rambling Rose which included her daughter.

“This movie that Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she flew me and Laura to the UK for a special screening and a celebration for us,” Ladd said about the film Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, taking our hands, and weeping, viewing our performance.”

The nineties featured performances in comedy The Cemetery Club joining her again with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political comedy, starring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne Citizen Ruth where she played Laura Dern’s mom another time. Those years also saw her score TV award nominations for roles on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She kept appearing alongside her daughter in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, Lynch’s Inland Empire and the series by Mike White dark comedy series Enlightened, a TV series. She was also seen with Sandra Bullock, a star in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film and Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.

Her more recent television parts included the series Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon, a comedy.

Filmmaking Ventures

Ladd also wrote and helmed the comedy film Mrs Munck, a film which starred Diane Ladd and former husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a great actor,” she mentioned. “It was a privilege to guide him in a movie. Indeed, I am the sole female in history to direct her ex-husband. I humorously say: ‘I tell women, should you desire retribution, direct your ex-husband.’ But I’m only kidding.”

Family Ties

Ladd was also a relative of the great Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a great influence in my life”.

During 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with a pulmonary condition and informed her life expectancy was six months yet she recovered completely when her daughter shifted her to another medical facility.

“If you can take your pain and not let it back up like an injury, rather utilize it to explore, to illuminate the way for yourself and others, then you are triumphing,” Ladd expressed.
